Sustainability | Luxury Tented Lodge | Mdluli Safari Lodge

The lodge, designed by international architects Luxury Frontiers, blends seamlessly into the surrounding Kruger landscape. Both the design and construction are anchored in strong environmental principles, ensuring a light ecological footprint. Day to day lodge operations are an extension of our intentional sustainability philosophy.

Sustainability

Our  initiatives

Our ongoing sustainability ethos includes:

“It’s amazing to see the regeneration of the land. We walked up the granite rock and looked back and saw nothing but bushes and trees. This is the perfect ESG model, there is nothing comparable at this scale."

Graeme Labe
Luxury Frontiers, Managing Director & Principal

ESG Rating

We are exceptionally proud to be the only lodge in South Africa with an AA+ ESG (environmental, social, governance rating). We achieved an 87% (AA+) grade on our selective, core Social Development Goals (SDG)  assessment. READ MORE HERE.

“The impressiveness of Mdluli’s far-reaching social and environmental impact cannot be overstated. Worldwide, most impact investment projects aim to demonstrate how they impact a handful of SDGs but struggle to do so. In Mdluli’s case, however, we see inspiring positive payoffs across a core and wide range of SDGs, quantified through the application of our +Impact SDG Investment Grading Tool. This puts the lodge in an elite bracket of projects.”

— Brett Wallington, CEO of Impact Capital Africa.

Lodge construction

The development of the lodge employed nearly 200 laborers, both men, and women, from the Community. Many of these individuals, most of whom had never worked before, gained both financial benefits and skills development.

Ecological design

We very deliberately chose to make use of alternative, sustainable materials given the amount of decking required in the construction of the lodge.

Sustainability

Sustainable construction using  recycled PVC

During the construction of the lodge, 4.9 tonnes of PVC used for internal floors were recycled.

Solar system

We’ve recently commissioned a solar farm inside the lodge, using the power of the sun to go completely off the grid. These solar panels capture the sunlight and convert the energy into clean, renewable electricity.

Not only will this massively reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, but also minimise our environmental impact.

In addition, a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) has been installed. This system stores excess energy generated during peak sunlight hours, making sure there is a stable and reliable power supply at all times (even peak load shedding periods).

By switching to renewable energy sources, we significantly reduce our carbon missions, reducing the harmful effects of climate change.

Over the course of its lifetime, this solar installation is projected to save an estimated 3,400 metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to planting 11 acres of forest or 122 000 trees.

Sewage and wastewater system

Our ecologically-friendly reed bed system works with natural filtration to treat water before it is released back into the environment. We have gone the extra mile to ensure our waste water and sewage water is correctly treated before being released into the environment. The system is an ecological process that is acceptable to treat water in environmentally-sensitive areas, and is also prescribed for use in the Kruger National Park. We use a Calcamite system, which is SANS and SABS-approved, to treat water to high environmentally safe standards. This complex, best practice process of filtration ultimately produces water that is safe for release back into the environment.

A Kruger Park gem

“A wonderful lodge in Kruger National Park! Beautiful tented rooms, warm hospitality, friendly service. Great sightings with our super ranger. Combined with a spectacular pool, and lovely in-room massage treatments, you cannot go wrong with Mdluli!”

Best safari lodge in Southern Africa

“Best safari lodge in Southern Africa. There is NO PLACE like Mdluli. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Nothing is ever too much for them. The food is absolutely fantastic. The views compare to no other in the country. If there were more than 5 stars, you guys will get 100 every time.”

Magical bush getaway

“Magical bush getaway experience, at an exquisite lodge! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend to bush lovers looking for an authentic bush experience, while still enjoying the luxuries of a lodge. The lodge is built overlooking the Kruger Park and offers exceptional views from all communal areas, including the infinity pool, bar, restaurant and boma. The tents are exquisite, exceptionally clean and fully furnished with all the necessary amenities – including both an indoor and outdoor shower. There is also a curio shop with friendly staff and a great variety of stock. While there, I celebrated my birthday and the staff went out of their way to make me feel special with a birthday picnic and a birthday dinner.”
